Car of the Month

Donnie Douglas's TX9 GTX with burnt orange (P6K4) interior

Donnie Douglas of Kentucky owns this rare restored TX9 black GTX with burnt orange bucket seat interior. Of the five TX9 GTXs in the registry with the P6K4 interior, Donnie's GTX currently is one of 4 known four speed GTXs with this color combo but at this time is the only one known with the white side stripe. In the 1970 GTX registry there is one Lynch Road built 6bbl 4 speed GTX with a black vinyl top while the other 4 black GTXs with P6K4 interior were built at the St. Louis plant and were all black with a black painted top. Donnie's GTX came optioned with the AM/8 track radio, clock/tac, 14” road wheels, and the 3.54 geared Dana 60 rearend. It also came with manual steering and brakes.

(Note: two of the black GTXs with P6K4 interior in the 1970 GTX registry I have very limited information on, just exterior and interior color and transmission. Roger L. Wilson)

Donnie relates that he bought his GTX from the second owner who flipped the car quickly to Donnie making him the third owner. When Donnie purchased the car it was in primer and as it was related to him this was so the police would not recognize the car as easily because the original owner's son allegedly ran from the cops with the GTX back in the early 1980's. When Donnie bought the car in 2012 he completely stripped the GTX body down to bare metal. Happily, there was very little bodywork necessary, just the usual door dings and other little damage spots, but no major issues and no rust at all. The car still has all its original body panels. The car was then repainted back to its original TX9 black color with the bottom also being painted black to seal it up nicely. The interior was all redone with Legendary seat covers, carpet and headliner. Early in the car's life, in 1972, the original engine was replaced with a warranty block, so Donnie completely rebuilt this engine with a larger cam shaft. He also went through the 18 spline hemi transmission and replaced the clutch with a better than stock one. Fortunately, the manual transmission and the Dana 60 are the original equipment to this GTX. Donnie says he has searched the internet for a couple of years now and has not found another one like his GTX with this color combination and options. To help document his rare GTX, Donnie has the original fender tag and broadcast.
