Don Collom’s 1970 GTX is rare in several ways. First it is 1 of only 157 painted FT6 burnt tan metallic paint. This amounts to only 2.2% of all GTXs made in 1970. Besides being ordered with the very desirable airgrabber hood, the original owner ordered an AM/8 track stereo radio, of which a little more than 20%of all GTXs had this style of radio. Don wrote that he bought this car in July of 1986. At the time he was looking for a ’70 Cuda or his next choice was a Challenger. The ones he checked out were all in the $6,000-7,000 range which was more than he could afford at the time.-due to just getting married and financing a new home. Soon, Dan spotted this 1970 GTX as it sat in the lot at Skyline Dodge on S. Colorado Blvd. in Denver. This dealership sets right around the corner from the Mercedes dealer, where Don works as a mechanic, so each day he drove by this GTX. The land that Skyline Dodge was on was sold to build a shopping center. The dealership had started moving all the cars from the lot and soon all the cars were gone except for the GTX. Since it was still sitting in the lot, Don stopped by and talked with a guy at the dealership who got him in touch with the owner of the GTX. The GTX owner was a young kid about 18-20 years old that worked at the dealership as a shag kid. Don asked him if the car was for sale. The owner said he had to get rid of the car because he had no place to put it and it was soon going to be towed away. Don asked if the owner had a clear title and he did. The asking price was $750. After a little negotiations, a price of $650 was finalized. Don was very happy to buy the car for this price as the GTX came with the airgrabber hood, even though the body was a little rough. So Don towed his new purchase home, a very happy owner of a 1970 Plymouth GTX. As you can see in the pictures, he has done a nice job of restoring this awesome example of a classic musclecar.
