Car of the Month

This month's feature 1970 GTX is owned by Blake A. Bohinc of New Jersey. He owns this beautifully restored rare GTX with FT6 paint, 6bbl engine with heavy duty 4 speed backed by a Dana 60 rearend with 3.54 gears. It is one of 18 FT6 burnt tan metallic painted GTXs in the registry. Of those 18 only 6 are 6bbl cars and of the 6bbl cars, only 2 have the black vinyl top. Blake's is the only FT6 GTX currently known with the black bucket seat interior, with 6bbl engine, 4 speed transmission and black vinyl top.

.

Blake said his GTX is listed in the Chrysler registry and documented by Galen Govier as well as being in the 1970 GTX registry database. Blake's car was originally delivered to Elm Auto Sales in Kearney, NJ and appears have spent its entire life in New Jersey. Blake purchased the car in 2011 from a friend. This past owner purchased it from the second owner who had health problems and had the GTX setting in his garage for almost 20 years. This explains why the GTX's body was rust free when Blake obtained it.

When Blake purchased this GTX, his friend had done a 4 year restoration which was started in 2003. Since that restoration was completed, the friend had only logged about 250 miles in the car before he agreed to sell it to Blake. The friend had painted the GTX B5 blue but Blake decided it was too valuable and rare not to be restored back to its original FT6 burnt tan metallic paint. The interior and undercarriage were left untouched. Blake removed the engine, which the previous owner had stroked to a 493 and sent it out to be rebuilt with the instructions to the engine rebuilder “to make it like it was when it was on the showroom floor back in 1970, except with a little hotter cam”. When completed the engine was dynoed at 487 hp and 525 pounds of torque. The engine is a correct date coded block but not the original one. The intake, alternator, exhaust manifolds, and undercarriage are all original. It took Blake 3 years to bring the car back to showroom condition.

Adding his own personal touch, Blake added some 1969 ½ 6bbl looks to this 1970 GTX with the black fiberglass hood with the big hood scoop including the 440+6 decals, black steel rims with chrome lug nuts (no hubcaps) and red line tires, even though the purist would say the car never looked or ran this good back when it was new. Blake feels the GTX runs and drives like it did on day one, maybe even better. The car is for sale to the right person who could appreciate it and enjoy the car for what it was originally built for.
